Flightless Records have announced the signing of Victorian four-piece Stonefield. Luminaries in the current wave of Australian psych rock, listen to their sludgy, electrifying new single ‘Delusion‘ now following a premiere on triple j’s Drive. The band have also announced two exclusive launch shows in Sydney and Melbourne for early 2018, details below.
Stonefield have been rendering their powerful mosaic of proto-psych since they were only as tall as the smallest of the strange stone formations that surround their hometown in Australia’s rural South-East. For over a decade, the four Findlay sisters have seemingly existed within their own stellar nebula; unaffected by fleeting modern musical trends, their sound is a homage to the prog, metal and psych powerhouses of the 70s whilst remaining completely their own.
Their sophomore record As Above, So Below (2016) laid a Sabbath-strata, from which they’ve launched a legion of dedicated followers as well as attracted bookings for festival dates and tours around the world with everyone from Meat Puppets to Fleetwood Mac.
Stonefield’s latest single ‘Delusion’, and first for Flightless Records, demonstrates a shift from the hardened psych pop of earlier records toward more prog and heavy metal. Heavy waves of operatic synth and tubular bells ring below guitars and sinister mellotron lines – the track feels like it’s sending a warning that humans don’t belong in space.
From the band: “Delusion was inspired by an overwhelming feeling of knowing you are a speck in the universe, getting lost in your own mind. We ventured away from classic song structure to create more of a journey, exploring synth sounds to support our love of a hypnotic sounding riff.”
Stonefield will begin a foreseeable huge 2018 with select shows in Sydney and Melbourne, before heading to the States for a residency at LA’s Bootleg Theatre as well as an appearance at Austin’s renowned Levitation Festival.
